Lessons from the mountains
Trekking and mountain climbing were adopted by many institutions across the country in the late 1900s as part of their curriculum. It was widely accepted that these activities would infuse virtues that were not usually given preference within the four walls of the classroom; virtues which were important for the overall growth of an individual.
Trekking is an ideal hobby that teaches discipline, teamwork, and instills leadership qualities. More importantly, it teaches an individual to make tactical decisions, to trust his/her instincts, and to find the good in every situation. In an era where social media lies at your fingertips, it helps you to disconnect and be comfortable with solitude, in this era where you can plug-in your earphones anytime it helps you to appreciate silence and in this era where you are constantly looking forward to something it gives you time to stop for a moment and introspect. These are the things that make trekking and mountain climbing a novel quest- an interesting journey of realization and exploration rather than just a daring adventure.
Here are the lessons that you can learn from climbing mountains:
1. Plan ahead and prepare well
2. Have a goal to reach
3. Persevere
4. Stop every once in a while to enjoy the view
5. Importantly, know that it is not about the mountain but about the people who you climb with
So, if you are young with questions whose answers you constantly seek, I urge you to climb a mountain every once in a while, to stop at the summit and enjoy the view. I urge you to travel, sleep on floors if you have to, make friends who are not of your age or your social background, learn to survive off a bag on the bare necessities, contribute to and learn from different communities and eventually develop your own sense of social responsibility and to use whatever set of skills you possess to make this world a better place!
